Insurance Coverage Guide for Senior Care

Understand what Medicare, Medicaid, VA benefits, and private insurance cover for assisted living, nursing homes, memory care, and home health care.

Medicare Coverage

Medicare covers short-term skilled nursing care (up to 100 days) after a qualifying hospital stay, and home health care when medically necessary. Medicare does NOT cover assisted living or long-term custodial care.

Medicaid Coverage

Medicaid covers nursing home care for eligible individuals and may cover assisted living through Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) waivers in many states. Eligibility is based on income and assets.

VA Benefits

Veterans may qualify for Aid and Attendance benefits to help pay for assisted living, memory care, or home care. The benefit can provide up to $2,431/month for a single veteran.

Long-Term Care Insurance

Long-term care insurance policies typically cover assisted living, nursing homes, and home care. Coverage varies by policy. Check your specific plan details.
